About The Pomsky

What is a Pomsky?

It is a newer designer breed of dog and the fastest-growing mix breed in the world!   A Pomsky is a mixed breed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky.  Typically first-generation pomskies are the result of breeding a Female Husky with a Male Pomeranian through artificial insemination.  The breed only started in 2012 and gained popularity so quickly because of the power of the internet.

 What do Pomskies look like?

The look of Pomskies can vary drastically, both with color and size. Most people are searching for the smaller size of the Pomeranian and the markings of Huskies. Sometimes they look more like a Pomeranian or more like a Husky.

When can you predict how big a Pomsky will be?

Most experienced breeders can give you an accurate gauge by 8 weeks old. Adding the mother's weight plus the father's weight and dividing by 2 is the most common formula we have seen.

 How intelligent are Pomskies?

Pomeranians are ranked 23 on the intelligence list, and Huskies are 45. Most Pomskies are of above-average intelligence and should be quite trainable.

 Do Pomskies shed?

Yes, they have major sheds twice a year and need consistent grooming in between their major blowouts!

Are they hypoallergenic?

No, Pomskies are not hypoallergenic. But, there are lots of other great dog breeds if this is a deal-breaker for you.

How often does a Pomsky need to be groomed?

They do need to be brushed regularly, at least once a week and preferably twice a week.  Grooming increases to 4-5 times a week during their blowouts in the Spring and Fall.

How much exercise does a Pomsky need?

Both Poms and Huskies are active dogs, so you can expect a Pomsky to be the same. They are best suited with active families who have large yards or can take them on daily walks.

How long do Pomskies live?

A typical lifespan of a well-cared-for Pomsky is 12-15 years.

What is a Pomskies personality and temperament like?

It really depends.  Pomeranians are friendly, intelligent, and active. Huskies are gentle, alert, and playful. So each Pomsky could fall anywhere on that spectrum.

Is Pomskies good with children?

Pomskies are generally very good with children. This isn’t a given, though, so setting boundaries for the Pomsky and children can create a harmonious relationship.

 What does F1, F1b, F2 mean?

These are genetic codes. F1 is the first generation Pomsky using a Pomeranian father and a Husky mother. Most Pomsky breeders are currently breeding these F1 dogs.

F1b is the result of a Pomsky being bred (usually) to a Pomeranian to achieve smaller sizes. (75% Pomeranian, 25% Husky) Looking for a smaller size but still Husky qualities.

F2 is F1 Pomskies breeding with F1 Pomskies, and this will be the standard once breeders achieve the results they want. This will make the breed much more predictable.
